BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College baseball team lost both games of a Southern Athletic Association double-header to #21 Birmingham-Southern College at Striplin Field on Saturday.
The Panthers (15-3, 8-1) took the first game 6-3, then topped the Warriors (8-10, 4-5) 6-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.
BSC jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in game one. Hendrix senior center fielder
Collin Radack hit a home run over the fence in left center to make the game 6-1 in the third. With two outs in the fifth, Radack reached second base on a throwing error and scored on a base hit from junior first baseman
Ryan Ritz. Two errors led to junior right fielder
Matt Simmons scoring the final run of the game in the eighth.
Ritz was responsible for two of the Warriors' four hits and stole a base. Senior second baseman
Jacob Perschke also had a hit a steal. David Bourbonnais went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Panthers. Third baseman Matt Brown also had two hits and scored twice and catcher Jacob Mayfield had a two-run double.
BSC starter Blake Stevens (4-0) struck out nine and allowed four hits and an earned run over seven innings to pick up the win. Bourbonnais fanned one in a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Sophomore starter
Kyle Teachout (2-1) allowed five hits and three earned runs in two innings for the loss. Senior
Justin Mosbey allowed four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five scoreless innings and freshman
Billy Lovvorn threw one perfect frame.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two when Zach Wingate hit a two-run double and left fielder Jeremy Hatley knocked in Wingate with a ground ball. The Warriors got two runs back in the second. Perschke led off with a single and scored on an error. Junior
Brady Newville singled and later scored on a Radack sac fly.
Hendrix gained a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth when Radack singles and scored on a Ritz double down the left field line. Freshman left fielder
Wyatt Hogan followed with a base hit, plating Ritz. Ritz' double extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Orange & Black went up 5-3 in the seventh when Simmons tripled with two outs and was knocked in by Hogan with a base hit. BSC tied it with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an error, a base hit and a walk. Hatley led the eighth off with a double, was bunted over by Zach Wagner and scored on a base hit to left by second baseman Taylor McCracken, ending the game.
Radack had two hits, a stolen base, a RBI and a run. Simmons went 2-for-4 and Hogan had two hits with two RBI. Third baseman Matt Brown led the Panthers with two hits and a steal.
Reliever Ryan Gaines (4-0) threw three innings and gave up three hits and a run to earn the win. Sophomore
Daniel Imbro (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Hendrix will host the University of the Ozarks at Warrior Field on Tuesday night.
