CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball team won all three games of a triple-header against Centre College at Warrior Field on Saturday. The Warriors (7-7, 5-2 Southern Athletic Association) took the first game from the Colonels (5-8, 4-3) 4-0, then followed with a 5-4 win in eight innings and closed the day with an 11-9 victory.
In game one, sophomore pitcher
Kayla Patton threw a six-hit, one-walk complete game shutout with one strikeout. Elysse Petrie allowed 11 hits, three earned runs, one walk and struck out two in the loss for Centre.
Hendrix scored one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two int he sixth.
Patton went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI at the plate. Junior shortstop
Michaela Larabee had a double and a RBI single. Sophomore third baseman
Shelby Anderson and freshman first baseman
Sydney Ozersky had two hits each and
Victoria Hughes and TIffany Hubbard both drove in a run.
Right fielder Brittany Sears had two hits for the Colonels.
In game two, Centre took a 2-0 lead after RBI doubles from Katie Martello and Tori Silcox in the third. Hughes singled and scored an Anderson base hit in the fourth to make it 2-1. The Warriors tied the game in the sixth when Hubbard led off with a single and later scored from third after an error by catcher Silcox on a pickoff attempt.
The Colonels scored two in top of the eighth on a RBI double from center fielder Ashley Christian and a ground ball by Jessika Young. The Warriors won the game in the bottom of the eighth with three runs on two hits and an error. With one out, Larabee reached on an error and scored on an Anderson double up the middle. Patton was intentionally walked, and after a pop up by catcher
Amanda Riley for the second out of the inning, senior pinch hitter
DJ Sandidge drew a walk to load the bases. Ozersky hit a ground ball to second baseman Emma Ryder, but her throw to shortstop Emily Staples was beat by Sandidge, allowing Anderson to score the tying run. Junior right fielder
Morgan Fires followed with a base hit up the middle, plating Patton for the winning run.
Patton (5-4) struck out four and gave up 13 hits, two earned runs and two walks for her second win of the day. Petrie (3-4) fanned four and allowed seven hits, one earned run and walked three in 5.1 innings of relief for the loss.
Patton broke the school record for most walks drawn with four. Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double and two batted in and Ozersky hit a pair of doubles as well. Fires had two hits and the game-winning RBI.
Sears led the Colonels at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Christian also had two doubles and scored twice.
Game three saw both teams record 14 hits and combine for seven errors - four for Centre and three for Hendrix.
The Warriors built a 9-1 lead after three innings and the Colonels played catch up the rest of the way.
Senior second baseman
Catelyn Gibbs went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to lead Hendrix at the plate. Anderson had two more doubles with two runs scored and two RBI. Patton went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. Ozersky had two hits and three RBI and Fires drove in two with a base hit. Larabee walked twice and scored three times.
Sears went 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Christian was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.
Sophomore
Ariel McDonald (1-1) earned the win, fanning three and giving up two earned runs and two walks. Young (2-2) lasted two innings as the starter, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and two walks.
Hendrix and Centre will conclude the series with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
