Hendrix Takes Two from Millsaps

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team took both games of a Southern Athletic Association double-header from Millsaps College at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (10-11, 6-5) took the first game from the Majors (12-10, 5-6) 6-4, then won a marathon 15-inning game 2-1.

In the opener, Hendrix overcame a 4-0 deficit after two and a half innings. In the bottom of the third, freshman third baseman Spencer Summers doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and stole home to make the game 4-1.

The Warriors took the lead with four runs on five hits in the fifth,including a sac fly by Spencer Summers and RBI singles by Seth Mobley, Thomas Weber and Matt Simmons. Weber led off the eighth with a base hit and was lifted for senior pinch runner Austin Womack. Senior second baseman Jacob Perschke singled to left, plating Womack for the final run of the game.

Weber and Perschke each had two hits for the Warriors. Newville and Summers recorded doubles. Logan Patterson, Samuel Doucet and Andrew Rafferty all had two hits for the Majors.

Sophomore starter Will Nichol (2-0) picked up the win, allowing 10 hits, one earned run and two walks with a strikeout in six innings. Junior Nick Land earned his first save of the year, allowing just one walk and fanning one in three scoreless innings. Smokey Ethridge (3-4) took the loss, giving up nine hits, six runs and two walks with seven Ks.

Game two was scheduled for seven innings and Millsaps took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Newville had a pinch hit single and was replaced on the bases by Womack. Senior center fielder Collin Radack followed with a base hit to score Womack and forcing extra innings.

The next seven innings were scoreless until the bottom of the 15th. Weber led off by being hit by a pitch, then Simmons singled to left. After a pop up out, Perschke drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore pinch hitter Zane Heather drove in Weber to win the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The game was the second longest in program history for the Warriors, next to a 16-inning 0-0 tie at the University of Arkansas on May 21, 1920. Hendrix set new school records for most at bats (54), chances (61) and putouts (45).

Both teams had 12 hits a piece. Perschke had three hits for the Warriors and Radack and Simmons each had two. Freshman catcher Logan Hiatt had a double and junior shortstop Ryan Ritz had a triple.

Doucet had four hits, including a double, and Patterson came up with three hits for Millsaps.

Sophomore Daniel Imbro (1-1) struck out three and allowed one hit in 4.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win. Senior Justin Mosbey surrendered four hits and struck out one in 5.1 innings of relief  Zack Snider (1-2) took the loss for the Majors. Starter Keith Shumaker allowed nine hits, a run and two walks with seven strikeouts in 10 innings.

Hendrix and Millsaps will wrap up the series at noon on Sunday.
