CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball team opened Southern Athletic Association play with a pair of losses to Millsaps College at Warrior Field on Saturday.
The Majors (9-0, 2-0) took the first game 9-6, then beat the Warriors (2-7, 0-2) 10-7.
In game one, Millsaps scored five runs in the top of the second, including a two-run single from Abbie Joiner and a two-run double by Rayne Gravat. Hendrix senior center fielder
Tiffany Hubbard led the third off with a double and scored on a triple from sophomore third baseman
Shelby Anderson.
The Warriors gained a 6-5 lead with five runs in the fourth. Anderson hit a three-run double in the frame to put the Orange & Black up. The Majors scored four in the top of the seventh on five hits, including a three-run double to center field by Joiner.
Anderson went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Hubbard had a pair of hits, and scored twice.
Joiner drove in five runs for the Majors. Second baseman Megan Murray and Tiffany Havard each had three hits.
Millsaps outhit Hendrix 15-6.
Blakelie Entremont (5-0) earned the win by allowing two walks and one hit with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief. Sophomore
Ariel McDonald (0-1) took the loss, giving up seven hits, four runs and three walks with one strikeout.
In the nightcap, the Warriors jumped out to a lead in first on a two-run base hit from sophomore pitcher
Kayla Patton. An error and a RBI-single from Patton in the third gave Hendrix a 3-0 advantage through three.
Millsaps scored five runs on five hits and two errors in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, but Hendrix answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Hubbard hit a sacrifice fly, senior left fielder
Catelyn Gibbs had a RBI single and sophomore right fielder
Courtney Riley plated two with a base hit.
After a run for the Majors in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-6, Millsaps won the game in the top of the seventh with four runs on five hits. Left fielder Casey Brown recorded a two-run double in the inning.
Patton led the Warriors wat the plate with two hits and three RBI. Hubbard had two hits, including a double, as did Riley.
Shortstop Caroline Thompsons went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Millsaps.
Katie Birdwell (3-0) struck out two and gave up three hits, four runs and three walks in three innings of relief for the win. Patton (1-4) allowed 15 hits, eight earned runs, two walks and fanned one.
Hendrix and Millsaps will play another double-header on Sunday at noon.
