CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball team swept Millsaps College in a double-header at Warrior Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors (4-7, 2-2) took the first game 7-2, then defeated the Majors (9-2, 2-2) 7-5 in the nightcap for the visitors' first losses of the year.
In game one, Hendrix scored one in the third when sophomore pitcher
Kayla Patton drove in sophomore left fielder
Courtney Riley with a base hit. They went up 6-0 in the fifth after five runs on five hits. Freshman first baseman
Sydney Ozersky had the big hit with a three-run double in the frame.
Millsaps designated player Tiffany Havard hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make the game 6-2. Hendrix added one more in the bottom of the inning when junior shortstop
Michaela Larabee led off with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher
Amanda Riley.
Larabee, Patton, Amandy Riley,
Courtney Riley and
Morgan Fires each had a pair of hits for the Warriors.
Shortstop Caroline Thompson and center fielder Abbie Joiner had a pair of hits a piece for the Majors.
Patton picked up the win in the circle with three strikeouts and allowing eight hits and two runs. Blakeli Entremont (5-1) lasted 4.2 innings and gave up 10 hits, six runs, one walk and struck out two.
In game two, the Warriors scored one in the first, but the Majors went up 2-1 in the top of the third on a Megan Murray home run over the center field fence. Hendrix answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, which included RBI doubles from Ozersky and freshman second baseman
Victoria Hughes, and a run-scoring single from senior
Tiffany Hubbard.
Thompson doubled in the fourth, plating Casey Brown to cut the deficit to 5-3 for the Majors. Larabee hit a two-run single in the fifth, scoring
Courtney Riley and Hubbard to give the Orange & Black and 7-3 advantage. Millsaps threatened with a pair of runs on three hits in the seventh, but Hendrix managed to escape with the 7-5 victory.
Each of the Warrior lineup recorded at least one hit, with Hubbard getting on three times and Ozersky, Hughes and
Amanda Riley reaching twice.
Patton (3-4) once again earned the win, allowing 11 hits, five runs, two walks and striking out two over the seven innings. Katie Birdwell (3-1) took the loss, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and a walk over 2.1 innings.
Hendrix will be back in action on Saturday when they host Centre College for another conference weekend series.
