DANVILLE, Ky. - The Hendrix College men's lacrosse team lost to Centre College, the second place team in the Southern Athletic Association, 15-9 at Farris Stadium on Friday night.
With one game left in the regular season, the Warriors (7-8, 3-3) are tied for fourth place in the SAA. Hendrix would gain the fourth seed and host a first round game of the SAA Tournament if they defeat first place Sewanee on Sunday, and Birmingham-Southern loses to eighth-place Oglethorpe.
The host Colonels (9-3, 5-1) outshot the Warriors 63-33 overall and 19-34 on goal. Centre held a 36-34 ground ball advantage and won the turnover battle 31-14. Hendrix won 18-of-27 faceoffs and went 21-of-27 on clears, while Centre was 18-of-20.
Senior midfielder
Cameron Millstone scored the first goal of the game on a man-up opportunity with an assist from freshman
TK Shaffer to put the Warriors up. After back-to-back goals for Centre, sophomore attacker
Patrick Rogers tied it up on a pass from freshman
Robbie Borrello. Colonel Connor Stubbs scored with 3:12 left in the first quarter to go up 3-2.
Rogers scored another power play goal on a Shaffer assist, tying the game 3-3 to open the second period. The Colonels went 5-3 before Borrello had goals back 14 seconds apart to make the game 5-5 with 9:42 left in the second. Millstone and freshman
Cody Eckes each assisted a Borrello goal. Wesley Hardman and Stubbs scored just before halftime to give Centre a 7-5 lead at the break.
Stubbs found the net again 31 seconds into the third quarter, but Borrello registered his third score of the game on a
Travis Rabun pass to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 12:08 into the third quarter. Centre added four more goals in the quarter to expanded their lead to 12-6. Both teams scored three goals in the fourth quarter.
Millstone, Borrello and Rogers each had hat tricks for Hendrix. Millstone also had two assists and Borrello had one. Shaffer ended up with two helpers as well.
Freshman midfielder
Jason Blatt won 17 faceoffs with eight ground balls. Blatt broke the single season ground ball record with 142 on the year, passing Millstone's total of 138 set last season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Christian Wheeler stopped a season-high 19 saves with six ground balls and a caused turnover.
Stubbs led Centre with five goals and an assist. Peter Murphy had two goals and six assists. Keeper Bryce McCoy stopped 10 shots in goal.
Hendrix will play at Sewanee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
