CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team split a Southern Athletic Association double-header with Oglethorpe University at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Stormy Petrels (15-18, 5-11) won the first game 9-8 in 11 innings, but the Warriors (18-14, 9-8) rebounded to win the nightcap 10-8 in seven innings.
In game one, OU led 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Hendrix picked up two runs in the sixth when sophomore catcher
Zane Heather led off with a single and later scored from third on a balk. Senior center fielder
Collin Radack tripled and scored on a fielding error on a
Jacob Perschke ground ball to make the game 5-3.
With two outs in the seventh, junior right fielder
Matt Simmons singled up the middle and scored on a
Brady Newville base hit to make it 5-4. Third baseman Austin Ferlita hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth to extend the Petrel lead to 7-4. Radack singled to lead off the bottom of the frame and was doubled in by Perschke, who moved to third on a
Wyatt Hogan base hit. Perschke scored on the ensuing double play ball to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Left fielder Andre Turnquest doubled in second baseman Keith Dearden to put OU back up 8-6 in the top of the ninth. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Newville and freshman third baseman
Spencer Summers drew walks and Radack was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Perschke followed with a two-run single, plating Summers and pitcher
Nick Land, who was running for designated hitter Newville, to force extra innings.
Catcher Hunter Riley drew a walk with two outs in the 11th and scored the game-winner on a Turnquest double.
Perschke went 3-for-6 with three RBI, a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Radack had two hits and two runs, while Newville went 2-for-4 with two driven in. Heather also had a pair of hits.
Turnquest went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles for OU.
Reliever Patrick Kulick (2-2) struck out two and allowed three hits, two runs and four walks in three innings to get the win. Land (1-4) fanned three, but allowed four hits, two runs and a walk in three innings of relief for the Warriors.
In the second game, Hendrix jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Hogan hit a two-run double and later scored on an error. After an error led to an OU run in the second, Hendrix added another one in the bottom of the inning when Summers was hit and scored on a Radack double.
The Stormy Petrels tied it t 4-4 in the third when Kulick hit a three-run homer over the fence in center field. Oglethorpe picked up two more in the fourth, while Hendrix scored one to make the game 6-5.
Vernon Trice doubled to lead off the top of the fifth and was plated on a Ferlita sacrifice fly. The Warriors regained an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on two hits. Hendrix tacked on a two-run single by Heather in the sixth to go up 10-7. OU added a final run in the top of the seventh.
Hogan had a double with three RBI and two runs scored and Heather was 2-for-4 with three driven in. Radack also had two hits, including a double, and junior shortstop
Ryan Ritz connected on two hits as well. Summers scored twice.
Kulick went 2-for-3 with the three-run homer. Trice had two doubles and TJ Schmutz also had a double with a run scored and a RBI for the Petrels.
Warrior sophomore reliever
Daniel Imbro (2-2) earned the win by striking out four and giving up three hits, two runs and two walks in 3.2 innings. OU's Kyle Mitchell (3-4) took the loss, giving up four hits, three earned runs and two walks.
Hendrix and Oglethorpe will wrap the series up on Sunday at 11 a.m.
