Hendrix Takes Series From Oglethorpe

Senior second baseman Jacob Perschke drove in three runs with a triple and double on Sunday

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team defeated Oglethorpe University 12-5 on Sunday at Warrior Field to take the Southern Athletic Association series two games to one. The Warriors (19-15, 10-8) outhit the Stormy Petrels (15-19, 5-12) 14-10 and took advantage of 5 OU errors.

Hendrix jumped out to a hot start with four runs in the first. Senior center fielder Collin Radack led off with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Senior second baseman Jacob Perschke followed with a triple. Freshman left fielder Wyatt Hogan singled in Perschke to go up 2-0. After a Matt Simmons base hit, sophomore catcher Zane Heather drove in two runs with a base hit to right center.

The Petrels scored a pair of runs in the second when third baseman Autin Ferlita doubled and scored on a Joey McAlpin double. First baseman Frank Sarno singled and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Keith Dearden.

The Warriors batted around in the fourth inning on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Perschke had a RBI-double, Hogan - a run-scoring single, Simmons drew a bases loaded walk and Heather was hit by a pitch with the sacks full as well.

OU made the game 8-3 in the top of the sixth when catcher Hunter Riley singled in Dearden.

Three hits, two errors and a wild pitch led to three more runs for the Orange & Black in the sixth. The Petrels picked up a run in both the seventh and the eighth.

Freshman Travis Phillips led off the bottom of the eighth with a pinch hit walk and later scored on a Perschke sac fly for the final run of the game.

Radack reached base all six times he came to the plate with four singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. He also scored twice and stole two bases. Perschke had a double and triple with two runs and three RBI. Hogan had a pair of hits, two runs scored and two RBI and Simmons also had two hits and scored twice. Heather went 2-for-4 with three batted in and freshman third baseman Spencer Summers scored twice.

Dearden went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a sac fly for OU.

Senior starter Thomas Weber (4-3) earned the win by fanning five batters and giving up nine hits, four runs and two walks in 6.2 innings. Senior Justin Mosbey closed the game with one strikeout, one hit, one walk and an unearned run allowed. Petrel starter Justin Dempsey (0-3) allowed seven hits, four runs and two walks in three frames.

Before the game, the Warriors honored their five seniors - Radack, Perschke, Weber, Mosbey and Austin Womack.

Hendrix will host in-town rival Central Baptist College at 6 p.m. on Monday.
