Softball Splits With BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College softball team split with Birmingham-Southern College on the final day of their Southern Athletic Association series on Sunday afternoon. The host Panthers (20-14, 17-3) took game 9-1 in six innings, but the Warriors (14-16, 8-9) rebounded to win the finale 9-7.

BSC scored the first run of game two in the bottom of the second. Hendrix tied it up in the top of the third when freshman second baseman Victoria Hughes led off with a single, was bunted over by senior Catelyn Gibbs and scored on an error on a Shelby Anderson ground ball. The Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by left fielder Hannah Harris.

The Orange & Black tied it up again with two runs on two hits and two errors in the fourth. Senior catcher DJ Sandidge had a run-scoring single and Hughes knocked in center fielder Tiffany Hubbard from third on a ground out. BSC led 4-3 with a run in the fourth, but the Warriors took a 5-4 advantage with two-run single by freshman first baseman Amanda Riley in the top of the fifth. The home tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning.

Hendrix broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth. Hughes singled, stole second and junior shortstop Michaela Larabee drew a walk with two outs. Anderson followed with a base hit, plating Hughes. Sophomore Kayla Patton cleared the bases with a double and later scored after an error. The Panthers managed two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Patton went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double and Riley was 2-for-3 with two driven in. Hughes and Anderson also had two hits each. Bethany Fronk had three hits, two runs and two stolen bases for BSC and right fielder Amanda Ballew was 3-for-4. with two runs.

Freshman Hope Resor (3-5) earned the win, allowing 11 hits, five earned runs and struck out one. Fronk (11-10) allowed six hits, five earned runs and a walk in 1.2 innings of relief.

In game one, BSC scored three runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third and two in the sixth. The Warriors' only run came in the sixth when Anderson tripled and scored on a Patton double.

Patton went 2-for-3 at the plate for Hendrix. Gibbs, Anderson and Riley each had a hit. Harris recorded three doubles, four RBI and two runs scored and Fronk was 3-for-4. First baseman Alyssa Statham also had two doubles and scored twice.

Fronk picked up the win, giving up five hits, one run, a walk and two strikeouts in six innings. Patton (9-10) took the loss, allowing 10 hits, seven runs, a walk and one strikeout.

Hendrix will play their final non-conference game of the year on Wednesday when they host Lyon College at 7:30 p.m.
