CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball overcame a 5-0 early deficit to defeat Williams Baptist College 11-7 at Warrior Field on Tuesday night.
The Warriors (20-14) gave up five runs on four hits and three walks in the first inning to the Eagles (8-26). After the shaky start, sophomore starter
Brian Commerford settled down and retired 13 straight with three strikeouts before being relieved by freshman
Alex Raab in the the sixth. Raab, making his collegiate debut, earned the win by allowing two hits and fanning one in a scoreless inning.
Hendrix plated nine runs on eight hits and two errors in the bottom of the sixth to gain the lead. Junior designated hitter
Brady Newville had the big hit of the frame with a two-run single. The Orange & Black tacked on two more in the seventh when Newville led off with a single and senior center fielder
Collin Radack doubled, moving Newville to third. Senior second baseman
Jacob Perschke followed with a bloop double, clearing the bases. When Radack crossed the plate, he broke Clark Sims' school record with the 158th of his career.
WBC picked up a RBI-single from pinch hitter Ryan Cupp in the eighth and center fielder Kagen Brown drew a bases loaded walk in the ninth for the final runs of the game.
Newville went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Radack also had four hits with two doubles and a stolen base. Perschke was 2-for-4 with three driven in and two scores. Junior right fielder
Matt Simmons drove in two runs and freshmen
James Martin and
Spencer Summers each had one RBI.
Shortstop Kendall Fay was 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI for the Eagles. Third baseman Seth Hart also had two hits.
WBC reliever Taylor Wilson (0-1) took the loss.
Hendrix will host crosstown foe Central Baptist College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
