SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Hendrix College baseball team opened a three-game series with Sewanee - The University of the South with a 7-3 victory at Montgomery Field on Friday.
The Warriors (21-15, 11-8) picked up a run in the top of the second when junior shortstop
Ryan Ritz led off with a single, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on base hit by junior designated hitter
Brady Newville. Hendrix went up 4-0 in the fourth with three runs on two hits, two walks and an error. Freshman third baseman
Spencer Summers had a two-run double in the inning.
Senior center fielder
Collin Radack broke the program single-season hits record with a solo home run to lead off the fifth, giving the Warriors a 5-0 advantage. The hit was the 66th of the year for Radack, passing the old mark of 65 set by Jackie Glover in 1999 and Justin Taylor in 2002.
The host Tigers (11-24, 1-19) scored three times in the sixth, including a two-run triple by center fielder Michael Walker. Freshman left fielder
Wyatt Hogan drove in senior second baseman
Jacob Perschke in the seventh and Summers knocked in
Matt Simmons in the eighth for the final 7-3 score.
Summers went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double for the Warriors. Simmons was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Hogan and Perschke also had a two hits each. Zack Sutton and Nate Barnett both had a double and a single for Sewanee.
Sophomore starter
Will Nichol (4-0) earned the win by striking out five and allowing five hits, three runs and two walks over six innings. Junior
Nick Land and senior
Justin Mosbey combined for three strikeouts and only two hits allowed three scoreless innings of relief. Tiger Mike O'Neil (2-6) started and allowed six hits, five runs, three walks and struck out two over five innings.
Hendrix and Sewanee will wrap up the series on Saturday with a double-header at noon.
