Baseball Breaks Wins Record, Season Ends

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College baseball team broke the program record for wins in a season, but their season came to an end at the Southern Athletic Association Tournament at Striplin Field on Friday and Saturday.

The fifth-seeded Warriors (23-20) defeated #4 Millsaps 2-1 on Friday, breaking the old wins record of 22 set in 2009 and 2012. Hendrix then lost to #1 Birmingham-Southern, the 19th-ranked team in the nation, 3-2 on Saturday, then was put out by Millsaps 11-6 Saturday evening.

Against the Majors Friday, the Warriors picked up a run in the second when junior shortstop Ryan Ritz led off with a single and later scored from third on a Brady Newville grounder. Freshman left fielder Wyatt Hogan knocked in senior center fielder Collin Radack with a base hit to go up 2-0. Logan Patterson led off the sixth with a walk and later scored on a double play for Millsaps' only run.

Junior right fielder Matt Simmons went 3-for-3 for Hendrix. Senior second baseman Jacob Perschke recorded a double.

Sophomore Will Nichol (5-0) struck out five and limited the Majors to three hits, one run and two walks over six innings to get the win. Senior Justin Mosbey earned his fourth save of the year, allowing just one hit and fanning two in three scoreless innings. Smokey Ethridge (5-6) struck out five and gave up seven hits and one earned run in the loss.

In Saturday's opener, the Panthers (32-10), took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run to center field by catcher Jacob Mayfield. Evan Grovenstein drove in Matt Brown with a base hit in the third to go up 2-0. Hendrix tied it up on three hits and a sac fly in the sixth. Ritz hit a sac fly to center, scoring sophomore catcher Zane Heather and senior first baseman Thomas Weber plated Perschke with a base hit.

David Bourbonnais walked and Jake Campbell singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth against freshman reliever Billy Lovvorn. Mosbey came in to pitch and loaded the bases by allowing a bunt single to Brandon Marino. The game ended when Bourbonnais scored on a wild pitch.

Perschke picked up two hits for the Warriors. Zach Wingate had two hits for BSC.

Lovvorn (1-2) earned the loss for Hendrix, while Bourbonnaios (5-0) struck out two, with a walk in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Majors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Saturday's elimination game. They added one in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth for an 11-0 advantage. Hendrix scored four in the sixth, including a three-run double by Weber. Simmons had a two-run single in the eighth for the Warriors.

Weber was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Hogan was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Freshman third baseman Spencer Summers had a double and a single and Ritz picked up two hits as well. Isaac Glenn went 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored for Millsaps. Keith Shumaker hit a solo homer and scored three times. Catcher Blake Littlejohn had four RBI.

Seven different pitchers threw for Hendrix, with starter Daniel Imbro (2-4) taking the loss. The Warriors allowed 19 hits, hit three batters and walked five. Shumaker (6-1) went the distance for Millsaps, giving up 11 hits, six runs and a walk with three strikeouts.
