CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College softball season came to an end as the Warriors went 2-2 at the Southern Athletic Association Tournament at Warrior Field on Friday and Saturday.
The fifth-seeded Warriors (17-22) opened the tournament with an 11-3 win over #4 Rhodes, before falling to #1 Berry 9-1 in five innings on Friday. Hendrix then eliminated #6 Centre with a 3-0 win, before being put out by #2 seed and eventual champion Birmingham-Southern 4-0 on Saturday.
Against the Lynx, the game was tied 2-2 before the Warriors exploded for seven runs on six hits and an error in the top of the fifth. Hendrix tacked on two more runs in the seventh. The Orange & Black outhit Rhodes 15-7.
Sophomore
Kayla Patton went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore third baseman
Shelby Anderson had two hits and two RBI. Senior
Catelyn Gibbs and juniors
Morgan Fires and
Michaela Larabee each recorded two hits and a RBI.
Catcher Courtney Williams had a two-run double for the Lynx and shortstop Erin Parker had two hits.
Sophomore
Ariel McDonald picked up the win, allowing five hits, three runs and two walks in four innings. Patton earned her first save of the year, giving up just two hits in three scoreless innings. Forrest Skelton took the loss for the Lynx.
Against the Vikings, Anderson drove in the first run of the game with a single to first, plating sophomore left fielder
Courtney Riley. Berry answered with six runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth.
Anderson had two hits for the Warriors and Larabee had the other. Center fielder Sara Vigue had two hits, including a double, and three RBI for the Vikings. Shelby Smith and Marie Collop each knocked in a pair of runs.
Patton (9-13) had the loss for the Warriors, while Allison Coronado (11-3) allowed just three hits and an unearned run in four innings to get the win for Berry.
Against the Colonels, McDonald (4-2) threw a nine-hit, one-walk shutout with two strikeouts. Elysse Petrie (5-13) gave up just six hits and two walks with four strikeouts, but Hendrix took advantage of Centre's two errors.
In the third, Larabee singled and scored on an error. Patton hit a solo home run to right field to lead off the fourth and Anderson had a run-scoring double, plating Larabee, who reached on an error, in the fifth.
Patton went 2-for-2 for the Warriors. First baseman Jessika Young and right fielder Kelly Staples both had two hits for Centre.
SAA Pitcher of the Year Taylor Harkins (11-7) picked up the win for the Panthers with an eight-hit complete game shutout. Freshman
Hope Resor (4-7) allowed nine hits and three earned runs with a strikeout for the Warriors.
BSC scored one in the second on a Hannah Harris RBI-single. An error led to another run in the fifth and they scored two runs on four hits in the sixth.
Patton and freshman catcher
Amanda Riley both had two hits for Hendrix. Alyssa Statham had a double and a single for BSC.
McDonald and Fires were named to the All-Tournament Team.
