Hendrix Splits With Berry on the Road

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Hendrix College baseball team split a Southern Athletic Association double-header with Berry College at William R. Bowdoin Field on Saturday. The host Vikings (20-10, 9-5) took the first game 5-4 in 11 innings, but the Warriors (16-12, 8-6) rebounded to win 6-3 in seven frames.

Berry took the lead of game two in the bottom of the first on a three-run double from catcher Will Heard. Hendrix got two runs back in the second on a RBI-single from senior designated hitter Austin Womack and a sac fly from senior center fielder Collin Radack. Senior first baseman Thomas Weber led the third off with a single, moved to third on a Wyatt Hogan double and scored on a ground out by junior right fielder Matt Simmons to knot the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh. Junior shortstop Ryan Ritz led the frame off with a single and moved to second on a Hogan base hit. Simmons followed with a double, plating Ritz as the go-ahead run. Junior catcher Seth Mobley bunt led to an error and Hogan and Simmons scoring insurance runs.

Senior closer Justin Mosbey came into the bottom of the seventh and allowed the first two batters to reach base on hits, but he closed the door with a double play and a ground out for his third save of the year, extending his scoreless inning streak to 19.2.

Sophomore Kyle Teachout (4-1) earned the win, allowing five hits, three runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Chad Busby (3-2) took the loss for the Vikings.

Ritz went 3-for-4  and Simmons hd two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Brady Newville also recorded two hits, as did Hogan. Radack's hitting streak was put to an end at 17 games. Shortstop Sam Joyce had two hits for Berry.

In game one, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Ritz singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Weber double. Hendrix went up 4-0 in the sixth with three runs and five hits. Ritz had a RBI single and senior second baseman Jacob Perschke drove in two with a base hit.

Berry tied it up in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on four hits. Heard ahd the big hit of the inning with a two-run double. In the bottom of the 11th, Heard led off with a base hit and right fielder Ryan Smith doubled, putting two runners in scoring position. An intentional walk was issued to Grant Perkins to load the bases. Joyce followed with a ground ball to Ritz at short, who threw Heard out at home. Pinch hitter Nick Stidham flied out to center field, allowing Smith to score the game-winning run on the sacrifice.

Radack went 3-for-6 with two stolen bases, breaking Clark Sims program career-record with 73 steals. Weber also had three hits and Ritz had two with two runs scored and a steal. Perschke broke a school record with 10 assists in a game at second base.

Heard went 2-for-5 with two RBI and first baseman Alex McGill had a pair of hits for the Vikings.

Busby won the game in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. Sophomore Daniel Imbro (1-2) took the loss for the Warriors, giving up five hits, one run and three walks in five innings of relief.

Hendrix and Berry will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
