Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's soccer team earned their second consecutive win, holding off Fontbonne University 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the Warrior Classic.
Wessel Westerhoff scored the game's lone goal in the 44th minute to lead the Warriors to victory. The sophomore received a pass from
Ryan Stanowski, took a collecting touch, and slid the ball far post past the diving goalkeeper. The ball skipped off the post and in to put Hendrix ahead 1-0 just before the halftime whistle.
In the second half, Fontbonne supplied a significant amount of pressure on the Hendrix back line, but juniors
Jacob Pierce and
Levi Jabben held the group together as they staved off all of the Griffins' scoring efforts. Fontbonne nearly tied the game when Carl Alsbach broke free in the 86th minute on a long ball and sent a header goalwards. His first effort cracked the crossbar and came right back to him. The Fontbonne forward headed it goalward again, this time finding the net. The Griffins broke out in celebration, only to be disappointed by the linesman's flag being raised to signify offsides. The goal was waved off and the pressure released from the Hendrix back line.
Nathan Myers finished the game with three saves to earn the first shutout of his career and improved to 2-0-0 on the season. Joey Mirth made four saves for the Griffins, but took the loss in net.
Hendrix will return to action on Sunday, September 14 at 2 p.m. when they take on #13 Emory College in the second day of the Warrior Classic.
