CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's tennis team opened their season with a stiff competitor, taking on the 48th-ranked NCAA Division II Harding University Bisons. The Warriors fell to the Bisons 9-0.
The Warriors struggled in doubles play, earning just six games across the three flights.
Robert Sheets and
Bob Berardi fell at first doubles 8-3, while
Ian McVinney and
Kiran Chakka lost by the same score at the second flight. Karthik Garmiella and
Kristian Lenser teamed at third doubles, but were blanked by the Harding pair.
In singles, the Warriors saw more success despite being swept. The Hendrix squad's highlight of singles play was at the first flight where Sheets fought valiantly against the #17 player in NCAA Division II. Sheets took the first set off of 17th-ranked Jon Mark Rowden 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-2. The Hendrix senior fell in a third-set superbreaker 10-6.Â
Hendrix falls to 1-2 after going 1-1 in the fall season. The squad will return to action next weekend when they take on Arkansas rivals John Brown University on Friday and University of the Ozarks on Saturday.Â
