GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Hendrix College baseball team lost to Concordia University Texas 17-14 in 12 innings in their final game of the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Collegiate Classic at AirHogs Stadium.
The game had 35 combined hits, with 15 for the Warriors (0-3), and 17 pitchers used.
The Tornados (2-4) picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Orange & Black scored in the second when sophomore first baseman
Josh Walker led off with a double and scored on a single to right center by junior right fielder
Matthew Lillard.
Hendrix picked up five runs in the fourth on four hits, an error, a passed ball and a pair of walks. Junior second baseman
Drew Judson had a two-run single in the frame to go up 6-2. CTX got a run back in the fifth, then made the game 6-5 in the sixth with two runs.
The Warriors went back up 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore third baseman
Jorge Leon singled and Judson was hit by a pitch. Junior designated hitter
Jake Wiegand drove both runners in with a single to right field.
Concordia knotted it up at 8-8 in the seventh. Bryce Helmcamp had a two-run pinch hit triple for the Tornados. CTX took an 11-8 lead in the top of the 10th after plating three runs on a hit, three walks and a wild pitch. Hendrix tied it up at 11 in the bottom of the inning. Leon singled, Judson walked and senior left fielder
Wyatt Hogan walked to load the bases to start the frame. After a pop up, Walker singled in Leon and Judson scored on an error on the play. Lillard followed with a sac fly, scoring Hogan.
Shortstop Landon Lau had a pinch hit two-run single in the top of the 11th to give the Tornados the lead. In the bottom of the 11th, sophomore catcher
Justin Robison led off with a walk and was lifted for senior pinch runner
Spencer Summers. Junior center fielder
JR McAuley then drew a walk and Leon laid down a sac bunt, but CTX could not get an out. Judson recorded a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Judson and Hogan followed with a RBI-single, allowing McAuley to score the tying run.
The Tornados scored four times in the top of the 12th on three walks, two batters hit, a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt. Lillard and sophomore shortstop
Tanner Cooper were both hit to start the bottom of the 12th. A ground out from senior catcher
James Martin moved both runners into scoring position, then McAuley singled to center, scoring Lillard. Leon walked top load the bases, but the next two batters flied out, ending the game.
Tristan Gideon (1-0) earned the in with two innings of relief for the Tornados. Senior
Colten Poellinger (0-1) took the loss.
