Warriors Split with Tigers at Home

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College baseball team split a Southern Athletic Association double-header with Sewanee - The University of the South at Warrior Field on Saturday. The Warriors (8-11, 3-2) lost the opener to the Tigers (10-9, 3-1), but rebounded to win the nightcap 4-2.

In the first game, Sewanee struck first with a run in the third inning. Third baseman Max Murray drew a walk and later scored from third on a wild pitch. Hendrix took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on junior center fielder Drew Judson's two-run home run blast over the left field fence.

The Tigers regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. Pitcher Drew Mancuso led off with a double and scored after right fielder Derek Hullings drove him with a ground ball that resulted in an error. First baseman Beau Allen, who singled, scored on a Murray sacrifice fly. Sewanee tacked on another run in the seventh on left fielder Jared Demkowicz' RBI-single.

Sophomore second baseman Tanner Cooper led the bottom of the ninth with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Sophomore third baseman Dylan Bowers drove in Cooper with a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.

Mancuso (5-1) was the winner on the mound, striking out five and giving up eight hits and two runs over 7.1 innings. Daniel McDonnell picked up his first save by allowing a hit, a walk and a run in 1.2 frames. Sophomore Taylor Barker (1-2) struck out a career-high seven batters for the Warriors, but took the loss with six hits, two earned runs and two walks.

Hendrix Game 1 Notes
- Senior reliever Connor Nelso struck out two and only allowed a double in two innings.
- Judson was 3-for-5 with two RBI, including his home run.
- Sophomore first baseman Josh Walker picked up a pair of doubles.
- Cooper doubled and scored.
- Bowers had a RBI on the sac fly and had a single.
- Senior left fielder Wyatt Hogan recorded a hit and junior Colin Brown had a pinch hit single.

Sewanee Game 1 Notes
- Catcher Ryan Poole was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Shortstop Trey Akins recorded a double, as did Mancuso.

In game two, the Tigers scored in the top of the third when center fielder Jackson Cooper led off with a walk, stole second and crossed the plate on an Akins base hit.

The Warriors tied it up on a Hogan solo blast to left field in the fourth. They then took a 4-1 lead in the sixth on two errors, two walks and a hit batter. Cooper recorded a RBI by drawing a bases loaded walk.

Sewanee scored in the seventh when Demkowicz walked and was later driven in on a Mancuso hit.

Brown (3-2) struck out two and gave up eight hits, two runs and four walks in 6.2 innings to get the win. Senior Brian Epstein recorded the final out of the game to earn his first save. Reliever Jackson Cook (1-1) took the loss for the Tigers.

Hendrix Game 2 Notes
- Hogan hit the solo home run, the sixth of his career.
- Sophomore shortstop Jorge Leon had a hit and a sac bunt.
- Freshman right fielder Sean Dehne had a hit, RBI and two stolen bases.
- Junior JR McAuley also stole a base.
- Judson threw out two runners from center field, including one at home to end the second.

Sewanee Game 2 Notes
- Akins went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
- Mancuso was 2-for-4 and a double.
- Murray went 2-for-2.
