ATLANTA - The Hendrix College men's basketball lost to second place Oglethorpe University 80-66 in road Southern Athletic Association action Friday night.
With the loss, the Warriors fall to 10-12 overall and 4-7 in league play. They are tied for fifth place with Sewanee with three games to play before the SAA Tournament in two weeks. The Stormy Petrels improve to 18-4 and 8-3 and remain in second place.
Hendrix shot 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the first half, but OU was hotter, connecting on 55.6 percent (15-of-27) of their shots, and making four more free throws to lead 36-30 at the break.
The Warriors cut the deficit to 44-40 with 14:59 to play after a layup from senior forward
Colton Primm, but the Petrels answered with a 13-2 over the next 3:25 to take control of the game. OU expanded their lead to as many as 18 and had a double-digit advantage the rest of the game.
For the contest, Hendrix shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) overall but struggled from outside, going just 4-of-21, and were 6-of-10 from the line. Oglethorpe shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) overall, 2-of-9 from outside and were 20-of-33 at free throw line, thanks to a 26-13 differential in fouls. The Warriors held a 31-29 edge on the glass.
Primm led Hendrix with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Sophomore guard
Drew Nikolovski scored 13 points and dished out three assists and freshman point guard
Gabe Gumm scored a season-high 11 points to go with three assists. Junior forward
Luke Vance recorded seven points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard
Jordan Barrett chipped in six points. Sophomore
Hank Aldous blocked three shots.
Alex Davis paced OU with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting along with three steals. Tyler Courson scored 19 points and grabbed five boards and Will Perry came off the bench for 15 points. Victor Rohlfs registered 11 points, five rebounds, six blocks and three steals.
Hendrix will take on Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. on Sunday.
