Dr. John Montgomery (Class of 1956) was a letterman in football and track for the Warriors. In track, Montgomery was well known for his prowess and stamina in the mile and other distance runs and won the AIC Championship in the mile in 1955. Montgomery served as co-captain of the football team in 1955 and was president of the H Club for lettermen. After graduation, he went on to pursue a successful coaching career starting with a stint in Broken Arrow, Okla., followed by a move to Conway to coach at the junior high - winning championships in football, basketball and track. He went on to serve as head coach in basketball and assistant coach in football and track in Benton, Ark., taking the 3A Football Championship in 1960. Under his leadership, the Benton track team dominated the conference and won the 3A State Track Championship in 1960. Montgomery then moved on to North Little Rock where he served as assistant coach. During his tenure, the 1965 football team went undefeated, and in 1966 won the Big 10 Championship. Montgomery concluded his coaching career at Arkansas Tech University, coaching football, track and cross country with winning successes in each sport including a cross country team championship in 1969.
