After graduating from Rockwall High School in Rockwall, Texas, Geraldo “Jerry” Maldonado III arrived at Hendrix College in the fall of 2006 to major in biochemistry, minor in physics, and become a doctor. Becoming an All-American track and field athlete was just a bonus along the way.

Maldonado spent his first year at Hendrix playing basketball for the Warriors, adding the high jump in the off-season as a way to stay in shape for the sport that was his first love. Time constraints eventually led him to switch only to high jump, which allowed him to focus on excelling in the classroom and lab – and he excelled in his new sport, too, capturing three straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference high jump championships (2008, 2009, and 2010) after finishing second as a freshman. He ranks both third and fifth in SCAC Championship history. Nationally, he placed 7th in the high jump in 2008. That same year, he earned outdoor All-American, only the second Hendrix track and field student-athlete to attain All-American honors.

Following his time at Hendrix, he went on to medical school at UT Southwestern. From there, he completed an internal medicine residency at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center and an anesthesiology residency at UTMB Galveston.
