Hendrix College Athletics

William Meriwether, class of ’27, was a “quadruple-threat” member of the Bulldog football team - - a halfback and passer on offense and All-State tackle on defense who regularly punted 60, 70, and 80 yards. He set state records in the shot put and discus and won first place with the javelin in several track and field meets. A pitcher and outfielder for the Bulldogs baseball team, Meriwether was the high point man in the state collegiate swimming meet in 1927 and was a member of the first Hendrix golf team.
